Verses in Holy Quran about Janabe Fatema Zehra (sa)

The sun has never shone on a lady more meritorious and virtuous than the chief of the ladies of the world, the one who is titled ‘the mother of her father’, the one who is revered in the Heavens and the Earth, the one in whose respect the Prophet of Islam always stood up, the one in whose progeny Allah placed Imamat and yet sadly she is the same lady who is among the five most crying ones on the earth, she is the one who was deserted by the companions of her noble father, she is the one who said, if the calamities which befell on me would fall on day it would turn into night. It is impossible to comprehend her status or acquire her recognition. Her merits have no limits, her greatness has no end and she has no equal or parallel.
In this treatise, we will glance through few verses of the Holy Quran which are related to this noble lady (sa). It is needless to say that these are just few verses which we are presenting here and there are numerous other verses where the Holy Quran has glorified her.

Verses in Holy Quran related to Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa)

1. Repentance of Hazrat Adam (a.s.) – Surah Baqrah 2:37

[Shakir 2:37] Then Adam received (some) words from his Lord, so He turned to him mercifully; surely He is Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.
And these were the words – O my Lord! I ask you for the same of Mohammed (s.a.w.a.), Ali (a.s.), Janabe Fatima (sa), Hasan (a.s.) and Husain (a.s.) except that you turn to me.[1]

2. Surah Noor 24:39

أَوْ كَظُلُمَاتٍ فِي بَحْرٍ لُجِّيٍّ يَغْشَاهُ مَوْجٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ مَوْجٌ مِنْ فَوْقِهِ سَحَابٌ ۚ ظُلُمَاتٌ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَا أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا ۗ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَجْعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ نُورًا فَمَا لَهُ مِنْ نُورٍ {40}
[Shakir 24:40] Or like utter darkness in the deep sea: there covers it a wave above which is another wave, above which is a cloud, (layers of) utter darkness one above another; when he holds out his hand, he is almost unable to see it; and to whomsoever Allah does not give light, he has no light.
Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says concerning the above verse, as for the utter darkness it refers to first and his companion, covers it a wave refers to the third, another wave which is a cloud of utter darkness one above another refers to Mowaiya (may Allah curse him) and the fitna of BaniUmayya. When he hold out his hands a believer in the darkness of fitna he is almost unable to see it and to whomever Allah does not give light there are they Aimmah (a.s.) from the progeny of Janabe Fatima (sa) he has no light the Imam on the Day of Judgement.[2]

[Shakir 25:74] And they who say: O our Lord! grant us in our wives and our offspring the joy of our eyes, and make us guides to those who guard (against evil)
Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says concerning the above verse – ازواجنا  refers to Janabe Khadija (sa), ذریاتنا  refers to Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa) and قرة اعین  refers to Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husain (a.s.) and و جعلنا للنتقین اماما  refers to Ali ibn AbiTalib (a.s.).[3]

[Shakir 33:57] Surely (as for) those who speak evil things of Allah and His Messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and the here after, and He has prepared for them a chastisement bringing disgrace.
Imam Baqir (a.s.) says, This verse is revealed concerning the one who usurped the right of AmeerulMomineen (a.s.) from him and snatched the right of Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa) and troubled her.[4]

5. Surah Zumar 39:53

[Shakir 39:53] Say: O my servants! who have acted extravagantly against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; surely Allah forgives the faults altogether; surely He is the Forgiving the Merciful.
Imam Baqir (a.s.) says, Allah will not accept the excuse of any person on the Day of Judgement, who will say, O my Lord! I did not know that the progeny of Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa) were the master upon the people. And the above verse is specially revealed for the Shias of the progeny of Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa).[5]

6. Surah Nahl:90

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ {90}

[Shakir 16:90] Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred.
Imam Baqir (a.s.) says concerning the above verse – العدل  is Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), and احسان  is AmeerulMomineen Ali ibn AbiTalib (a.s.) and وَإِيتَاءِذِيالْقُرْبَىٰ is Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa).[6]

“and on that day the believers shall rejoice,With the help of Allah;”

It is narrated from Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) that on that day refers to the Day of Judgement and help of Allah refers to help of Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa). Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) explains that on the Day of Judgement Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa) will do Shefaat of her Shias and Shias of her progeny, who loved her and loved her progeny and she will pick her Shias from the ground of Mahshar like how a bird picks up good seeds from the bad ones. Help from Janabe Zahra (sa) means her Shafaat.[7]

8. Surah Ahzaab 33:41

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا {41}

[Shakir 14:24]  parable of a good word (being) like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches are in heaven,Yielding its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord?

Imam Baqir (a.s.) was asked concerning the above verse, he (a.s.) said – the tree is Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), branch refers to Ali (a.s.) and the shoot of this tree of Janabe Fatima (sa), its fruits are her children and its leaves are the Shias. [10]

Imam Musa bin Jafar (a.s.) said: This was revealed concerning Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.),  Ameerul Momineen (a.s.), Fatima (sa), Hasan (a.s.) and Husain (a.s.)[11]

12. Surah Mominoon 23:111

إِنِّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ {111}
[Shakir 23:111] Surely I have rewarded them this day because they were patient, that they are the achievers.
In the above verse the patient ones are Ali ibn AbiTalib, Fatima (sa), Hasan (a.s.) and Husain (a.s.) in this world upon worship, hunger, poverty and being patient upon the calamities from the side of Allah in this world, they are the achievers. [12]

13. Surah Noor 24:36

فِي بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ اللَّهُ أَنْ تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا اسْمُهُ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ فِيهَا بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ {36}
[Shakir 24:36] In houses which Allah has permitted to be exalted and that His name may be remembered in them; there glorify Him therein in the mornings and the evenings,
In a tradition from Buraid it is narrated that Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) recited the above verse and Abu Bakr was standing there. He asked the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), which house is it? Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) pointed towards the house of Ali (a.s.) and Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa) [13]

14. Surah Saad 38:75

قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَيَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الْعَالِينَ {75}
[Shakir 38:75] He said: O Iblis! what prevented you that you should do obeisance to him whom I created with My two hands? Are you proud or are you of the exalted ones?
A man asked Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.): O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about the saying of Allah are you of the exalted ones? Who are these O Messenger of Allah who are more exalted than the proximate angels.

Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied: I, Ali (a.s.), Fatima (sa), Hasan (a.s.) and Husain (a.s.), we are near the Arsh of Allah, glorifying Him. And the angels used to glorify us one thousand years before the creation of Adam (a.s.)…. [14]
Quran has mentioned about the Ahle Bait (a.s.). Any sincere muslim would accept the authority of Ahle Bait (a.s.) based on these verses and its commentary. But, the reciters and commentators have forgotten or feign ignorance. Our responsibility in this era is to educate the people about these verses. Our responsibility is to guide them to the door of Ahle Bait (a.s.) and leave the rest on the honesty and sincerity of the seeker of truth.
We pray to Janabe Fatima Zahra (sa) to keep us on the straight path and give us the good fortune to serve her grandson Hazrat Hujjat ibn al Hasan al Askari (atfs) with sincerity and passion, in a manner which will bring a smile of her face.

Janabe Zehra (s.a) on the day of Qiyamat.

On the Day of Judgement, some people would be biting their hands (in fear), others would be gathered in humiliation and lowliness, remembering their disgraceful and shameful deeds. But, the shias of Ahle Bait (a.s.) would be in a completely different situation.

Every one on that day would receive his list of deeds. All humans, irrespective of color,  creed, faith, and his deeds shall be gathered, no one will be left behind. Allah has defined the condition and fear of the people as thus :

يوم يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ
And I ask You for protection on the day when a man shall flee from his brother, and his mother, his father, his spouse, and his children, each one of them on that day will have a concern which will occupy him. (Quran 80:34-37)

Nobody would be ready to help on that day. In contrast to their behaviour in this world, children will run from their parents and parents will run from their children, spouses would avoid each other, friends would not allocate time. On the contrary, the personablity which will take care of her shias is the great personality of Janabe Zehra (sa)

Let us have a look at the position of Janabe Zehra (a.s.) as can be understood from the traditions :

1.        Hakim reported in Al-Mustadrak v.2, p.153 that ‘Ali (a.s.) said: "I heard the Prophet say: "On the Day of Rising, a caller shall announce from beyond the veil: "O gathered people, lower your eyes so that Fatima (sa), the Daughter of Muhammad, may pass."

2.        Hamwini in Yanabi' al-Mawaddah p.104, who added the following to it: ‘Ali (a.s.) reported that the Prophet (S) said: "On the Day of Rising, a caller shall call from the sole of the Throne: O people of Resurrection, cast your eyes down, so that Fatima (sa)Bint Muhammad may pass-while holding Al-Husayn's shirt, which will (still) be saturated with blood.' She will then embrace the leg of the Throne, and say: O (Allah), You are the Omnipotent and Just; pass the judgment between me and those who killed my son." (The Prophet (S) added): "Then He shall judge according to my Sunnah, by the Lord of Kaaba, Fatima (sa) will then say: O Allah! Grant me intercession for everyone who cried for his disaster; Allah will then grant her intercession for them."

3.        Abu Nu'aym in Dala'el al-Nobowwah, Ibn Hajar in al-Sawa'iq al-Muhriqah, and others have reported that Abu Ayuoub Ansari said: "The Messenger of Allah (S) said that a caller shall call from the sole of the Throne: O gathered people, lower your heads and cast your eyes down so that Fatima (sa)Bint Muhammad may pass on the Path.' He added: `She then passes accompanied by seventy thousand Huri Al-Een, as if they were a flashing light."

4.        Jaber Ibn Abdullah Ansari said: "I said to Abu Ja'far (Imam Al-Baqir (a.s.)): `May I be your sacrifice son of Allah's Messenger; narrate to me a hadith in regard to the noble traits of your grandmother Fatima az-Zahra (sa), so that if I report it to your Shiites (followers), they would rejoice at (hearing) it!'
Abu Ja'far (a.s.) said: `My father told me that my grandfather reported that Allah's Messenger (a.s.) said: "On the Day of Rising, Minbars of light shall be erected for the prophets and messengers, one of which my Minbar shall be the highest among all Minbars on that day. Allah will then say: Deliver a speech,' so I will deliver a speech that none of the prophets, or, messengers have ever heard. Then for the successors (of prophets) shall be erected Minbars of light, and in the middle of these Minbars one shall be erected for my successor, ‘Ali Ibn Abu Talib, which will be higher than all their Minbars. Allah will then say:
"‘Ali, deliver a speech.' So, he will deliver a speech like no successor has ever heard before. Then for the children of the prophets and messengers shall be erected Minbars of light; among them shall be a Minber of light for my two sons, grandsons and the two flowers of my life (Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn). Then it shall be said to them: "Deliver speeches." So, they will deliver two speeches like none of the children of the prophets and messengers have ever heard before!
"A caller-Gabriel-shall then call: `Where is Fatima (sa) Bint Muhammad?'
She (sa) will rise..." (until he said): 'Allah, the blessed and exalted is His Name, shall say: `O people of the gathering; to whom does honor belong today?' So Muhammad, ‘Ali, Hasan and Al-Husayn will say: 'To Allah, The one, The Almighty 'Allah the Exalted will say: "O people of the gathering: lower your heads and cast your eyes down, for this is Fatima (sa) proceeding towards Paradise.' Gabriel shall then bring her a female camel from the female camels of Paradise; its sides shall be embellished, its muzzle with fresh pearls and it shall have a saddle of coral. It shall kneel down in her presence; so she will ride it. Allah will then send 100, 000 angels to accompany her on her right side, and 100, 000 angels to accompany her on her left side, and 100, 000 angels to lift her onto their wings until they bring her to the gate of Paradise. When she is near the gate of Paradise, she will look to her side. Allah will then say:
"Daughter of My beloved, why did you look to your side after I gave the command that you enter my Paradise?"
She will say: "My Lord, I wished that my position would be realized on such a Day!"
Allah will say: "Daughter of My beloved! Go back, and look for everyone in whose heart was love for you, or, for any of your progeny; take their hand and lead them into paradise!"
Abu Ja'far (a.s.) said: "By Allah; Jabir, she will pick her Shiites (followers) and those who love her just like a bird picks good seeds from bad seeds. So, that when her Shiites are near the gate of Paradise, Allah will inspire their hearts to look to their sides; when they do, Allah, The Almighty, will say: My beloved ones, why did you look around when Fatima (sa), the daughter of my beloved one, interceded for you?'.
They will answer: `Our Lord! We hoped that our position would be known on such a day!'
Allah will then say: `My beloved ones, go back and: Look for everyone who loved you for your love for Fatima (sa); Look for everyone who fed you for the love of Fatima (sa);

Look for everyone who clothed you for the love of Fatima (sa); Look for everyone who gave you a drink for the love of Fatima (sa); Look for everyone who prevented (Gheeba) backbiting from being done against you for the love of Fatima (sa)... Take their hands and lead them into Paradise... "'

May Allah give us taufeeq to see that day soon. May Allah keep us on the path of shiaism till our death so that we get benefit of shafaat of Janabe Zehra (sa).

Mutawakkil Abbasi (l.a.) – The Accursed

Oppressors are a test of Allah on believers. The steadfastness of believers increase when they face oppressors and oppression. On the other hand, the oppressors feel a sense of pride and power on being able to successfully torture the oppressed ones. They forget, the power granted to them is granted by Allah for doing good and they will be questioned for misusing the power. Wealth and power of this world encouraged them to show their hatred towards Allah, the Ahle Bait (a.s.) and the followers of Ahle Bait (a.s.).

Mutawakkil ala Allah al Abbasi (l.a) was one such oppressor. He was the Tenth Abbasid caliph who ruled from 232 to 247 A.H. He like his oppressive predecessors exploited religion to achieve power and worldly aims. He was born to a slave girl named Shuja, MutawakkilAbbasi (l.a) was such an opportunist and power hungry that he did not even hesitate to murder his son and close advisor, who had played an important role in raising him to the throne. He did all this to remain in the seat of power. Some of the historians have praised him saying that there are only three caliphs:

Abu Bakr:      because of his position against apostates,
Umar:             because of his attitude towards tyrants, and
Mutawakkil:   because of his revitalization of the Sunnah
However he was as despicable as his predecessors and ancestors. Let us list down his evil and oppressive acts.

Al-Mutawakkil lived a life of play with no tendency to seriousness. His life was full of amusement and joking. Historians say, ‘No play, joking, or clowning appeared in the meetings of the Abbasid caliphs before al-Mutawakkil. When al-Mutawakkil assumed the rule, he brought all that to his meeting and then most of the upper class imitated him in that. He brought imitators, who imitated the gestures and voices of some people and did comic acts, in his meeting.
Let us have a look at his other vices which makes him an accursed :
1.    Hatred for the sons of Ameerul Momeneen (a.s):
Mutawakkil once asked Abu Yusuf the teacher of his two sons Motaz and Muayyad:
اين دو كودك در نزد تو بهترند يا حسن و حسين فرزندان على

 "Whom do you love more, my sons or al-Hasan and al-Husain.”

When answer was in favour of Imam Hasan and Imam Husain (a.s),he handed him to the Turkish bodyguards, who so chastised and manhandled him that Abu Yusuf died two days later.

2.    Laughing at the insult of Ameerul Momeneen (a.s)

Ubadah al-Mukhnath was among his companions.  He used to put a pillow on his belly and uncovered his bald head and dance before the caliph, while the singers sang:

"Here is the bald one, the bellied one, the caliph of the Mus1ims, i.e., 'Ali,

Mutawakkil was amused at it.

3.    Demolition of  the Mausoleum of Imam Husain (a.s)

In 236 A.H. al-Mutawakkil ordered the demolition of Imam Husain (a.s)'s grave and the area surrounding it.  The historians have stated two reasons for it.

One reson  which is mentioned is that he once called for his concubine and it was told to him that she had gone to Karbala for pilgrimage. Not able to withstand her absence he ordered for the demolition of the holy grave.
The other reason that has been cited by the historians is that he was afraid of large number of shias gathering at the mausoleum of Imam Husain (a.s) and wanted to curb any potential uprising.

4.    The Created-ness of Holy Quran

He also put an end to the debate on whether Quran is created or not, ruling in the favour of it being not created hence shaking the very foundation of monotheism.

5.    Oppression on Alavis (Shias):

Mutawakkil strongly opposed the Shias and adopted various means to oppress them. He ordered his governors in Egypt that no land should be rented to Alavis and any witness against them should be accepted.
Further, he prosecuted the important figures of Shias like Yahya ibn Umar who was presented before him on the pretext that he planned rebellion against him. Yahya was flogged eighteen times and then imprisoned.
He also persecuted Isa b Jafar ibn Muhammad who rightly reviled the first two caliphs and their daugther. He ordered that he be beaten to death and thrown in the river.
He appointed harsh and oppressive governors like Umar ibn Faraj over Alavis who tortured and practiced an oppressive policy on them, punishing them harshly for a small mistake. By this harsh treatment Alavi families lost even their clothes. They remained in hiding for safety.

6.    Torturing Imam Ali ibne Mohammed An-Naqi (a.s.)
Mutawakkil forced Imam Ali Naqi (a.s) to reside in the poor quarters under the heavy observation of guards thus preventing Imam from free and natural life. He also raided the house of Imam (a.s) on the pretext that he (a.s) was gathering arms and planning to rise against him. Once he summoned Imam (a.s) while being drunk and asked Imam to recite a poem. He also dishonored Imam (a.s) by offering the pious and Infallible Imam a goblet of wine, Imam (a.s) recited the following reprimanding him and expressing his displeasure for him:

They passed the night on the summits of the mountains,

Protected by valiant warriors, but their place of refuge availed them not
After all their pomp and power they had to descend from their lofty to the custody of the tomb

O what a dreadful change: Their graves had already received them, a voice heard exclaiming:
Where are the thrones and the crowns and the robes of state?
Where are now the faces of the delicate, which were shaded by veils and protected by the curtains of the audience hall?
To this demand the tomb gave answer sufficient.
The worms, it said, are now reveling upon these faces.
Long had these men been eating and drinking but now they are eaten in turn
Al-Mutawakkil was shaken and intoxication flew from his head. He began terribly crying. Al-Mutawakkil ordered his men to take the glasses of wine away from the meeting.

7.    Laughing on the blessed existence of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s)
Mutawakkil had a habitual guest and companion, a poet Ali ibn Jahm who opposed the Shias.He once recited:
Look at these Rafidis who believe that there is a hidden Imam
The Imam is the one who has twenty thousand Turkish guards (Mutawakkil) with arrows ready.

Mutawakkil was a bigot and was finally killed by his son with the help of Turkish guards. He was murdered on the 4th of Shawwal 247 A.H. May Allah curse and increase his punishment manifold.

May Allah help us protect our imaan, when we confront an oppressor. May Allah give patience to those who are oppressed. May Allah hasten the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) who will end oppression and oppressors from this land of Allah.

Ten Inspiring traditions on Taqwa

“…surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).” [Surah At-Taubah, 4]

When Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) was asked to elaborate on the meaning of the word, ‘Taqwa’ he (a.s) replied, “Submit to the command {of Allah (s.w.t.)} and do not go near the prohibited.”
It means that one should endeavor to fulfill all the commands of Allah (s.w.t.) and abstain from the prohibited things.

In this article we present 10 inspiring traditions on Taqwa

1.    Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) –
"Whoever starts his day with piety in mind, but happens to commit a sin, will be forgiven by God."(Nahjul Fasaha, Tradition no 2954)

2.    Imam al-Rida (a.s) said,

"He who has no piety has no religion." [Kamal al-Din, Vol 2, p. 371, no. 5]

3.    Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a) said,

“The best of your religion is piety.” [Bihar al-Anwar, v. 67, p. 304, no. 18]

4.    Imam Ali (a.s) said,
